Thanks for this trip in the Wayback Machine, Eric. I finally made it to Cuba in 2015. Stayed in an apartment in Havana via our mutual pal Jeffrey Cardenas who has partnered with a Cuban couple to rent it out. Things were semi-grim even then with empty grocery shelves and frequent power outages. Can only imagine the situation these days. Resiliance is the key word here. And the people of Cuba have plenty of it. Looking forward to a return in better days ...

It's good that at least one of use made it down there. Jeffrey's better suited to worldwide adventure than me anyway. I'll go celebrate when they get some resources, and better leadership from their neighbor to the north.

Applying to go to Cuba in 1975 through Czech embassy came back to haunt me. Along with my other visits to edgy places it got me labeled as a “dangerous traveler” and I was denied a Global Entry pass. Hmmm, maybe I’ll write about that…

Worth a column, I'd say.

I went to Cuba as a child. It wasn't that big a deal back then, kinda like going to Vegas.

Ha! I know, people used to go in the '50s and live it up in the casinos. More style than Vegas, I imagine.
